This hand carved mug is made with Fuki-urushi lacquer, also called suri-urushi, a traditional and durable finishing technique where raw, liquid lacquer (tree sap), is rubbed into the wood grain with a cotton cloth and then wiped off, repeating the process multiple times to enhance the natural wood texture while providing a protective (usually satin finish) coating. Made by Akihiro Woodworks in Kagoshima, Japan.
