Riding through Compton by Melodie McDaniel

Melodie McDaniel spent several years in Compton, a community where one third of the population is under 18 and too many live in poverty, documenting a youth program that started as the Compton Posse by Mayisha Akbar and whose members created the Compton Cowboys. Youths were taught to ride horses, promoting self esteem and responsibility. The grace, care, community and joy that exudes from these photographs give such a powerful image of this legendary community. The book includes interviews with participants and critical texts.
